Millions of Americans get Social Security and Medicare benefits, and scammers are working to take advantage of vulnerable seniors by posing as representatives of these trusted organizations.  Our Milwaukee partners WTMJ and Call For Action Director Karen Stiles have some tips to avoid being taken by a scam caller.

The spam call-blocking service Nomorobo says it headed off more than 850,000 health-related robocalls in October alone. That’s nearly 5 times its September totals.

Common characteristics of these scams are callers being aggressive, fast-talking, or sweet-talking to you.  The caller may threaten legal action or suspension of benefits, or they may promise a better deal than you are currently getting.  If you get one of these calls, do not provide any personal information, such as your social security or other benefits number.  Just hang up.  Social Security and Medicare will never call you and ask for personal information.  If you are concerned, you can always follow up with Social Security, Medicare, or any other organization using a phone number you can verify actually belongs to the legitimate organization.  If you receive these scam calls repeatedly, you can file a complaint with the Federal Trade Commission.
