Our partners at WBRC in Birmingham, Alabama warn consumers to think twice before plugging your smartphone into a charger in a rideshare or airport. Gone are the days where your cell phone’s charging port was for charging only. Newer phones use USB technology for data exchange as well as charging. While this helps you backup your phone while it charges at home, it can also put your data at risk out in the world. Plugging your phone into the USB port on a ride-sharing vehicle could unintentionally upload your personal data into the car’s audio system. Hackers are also setting up fake charging stations at airports for the purpose of stealing your data through the USB charging port.
