Our partners at WTMJ interviewed a Milwaukee area Facebook user who was told he had won hundreds of thousands of dollars in a “lottery.”  He spotted the scam and wants to share his story to warn others.

The scammer was using a fake account to pose as a Facebook employee. The would-be victim identified this likely scam when he was told he would need to make a purchase to receive his winnings. Facebook messages are an easy way for scammers to contact you. Call For Action’s Eduard Bartholme warns that scams can appear more legitimate through social media because fraudulent accounts can disguise themselves as legitimate people by using pictures and video. He encourages people who have seen likely scams to report them and warn others who may be vulnerable.
