Are you thinking of selling an unwanted gift card on a website like Craigslist? Think twice. A new scam can take the value of the cards away before you get cash, as one Las Vegas-area man found out the hard way.

The man was selling a four hundred dollar Best Buy gift card on Craigslist. A buyer who contacted him requested that he call Best Buy and confirm the card’s veracity with the potential buyer still on the line, a seemingly reasonable request. However, unbeknownst to the seller, the scammer was able to use the phone to identify the touch tones of the card number when the seller entered them. The scammer was then able to use the card without ever paying for it.
