Our Providence partner, WPRI, looks into the problems with aftermarket airbags. These airbags are sometimes installed by body shops while repairing a car after the airbag was deployed.
Once installed the airbags often fail to deploy. Shops charge consumers and insurance companies full price and then install these cheaper airbags. Some shops have even put pieces of wood or other items in the space meant for airbags.
Rhode Island law makers are considering a bill targeting shops that install these dangerous airbags. A number of other states have passed similar laws to protect consumers.
