File with FTC on "Do Not Call" Violators
Michael has been on the Do Not Call Registry for over a year but still receives telemarketing calls. What can he do about them?
As you probably know, the Do Not Call Registry stops telemarketers from calling you unless you have an existing business relationship with them or give them permission to call. However, in Michael’s case the telemarketer called, sometimes as often as twice a day. He has had no dealings with the company and wants the calls stopped.
We suggested that he file a complaint with the federal government. The Federal Trade Commission is responsible for overseeing the registry and can bring action against companies that break the law. Michael should have the date the call was placed and the name of the company or its phone number. It’s very easy to file – just go to www.donotcall.gov.
The FTC uses the complaints to fine companies that violate the provisions of the Do Not Call Registry.
