Unclaimed Assets Search Firms

At least $10 billion worth of abandoned property is just waiting to be claimed. Could some of it be yours?

The pot of unclaimed money is so vast that many companies do a thriving business tracking down owners of lost assets. Known as search firms or heir finders, they pour over the name lists as soon as they are issued by the state unclaimed assets office. When they locate people they offer to investigate for a percentage of anything they recover. The amount can vary from 30 to 50 percent.

Of course you can check unclaimed property lists yourself but if a search firm calls, don’t hang up. Ask for written credentials but don’t be in a hurry to sign a contract or otherwise commit yourself. Above all, don’t be pressured by warnings that you’ll lose your rights to the property unless you take action right away. Most assets can be claimed forever. Don’t pay anything in advance. Legitimate search firms collect only when they come up with something.

If you want to do it yourself, we can tell you how to get info on the unclaimed assets office for your state.
