If a collect call is billed to someone who is not a customer of the carrier whose services were used to place the call, a surcharge is added. Use a company’s 800 number to place a collect call instead of dialing “0.” Unless you want to pay the highest rates of all, don’t make a collect call “person-to-person.” Instead, use a service that offers a single low rate regardless of when you place the call.
