Choosing a Medical Specialist

One of the best ways to find a specialist is through a personal referral or from another doctor you trust. But in addition you may check to see if the doctor is board certified. It’s as easy as picking up the phone or your computer mouse.

Not all board certifications are equal. Some are recognized by the American Medical Association, but the self-designated boards are recognized only by the people who declare themselves boards. In order to know the difference ask if the board is recognized by the A.M.A.

The American Board of Medical Specialists is the most recognized board certification program, providing free information on doctors in 24 specialties who have passed the board’s exam. Board certification does not prove competence but it does indicate the level of a doctor’s knowledge. Doctors must re-certify depending on their specialty.
